1 to 3-Year-Old Children

Your childlanguage skills will develop rapidly between 1- and 3-years old. After 18 months, children’s language will typically skyrocket. Learn about your child’s English learning milestones below to foster their growth.

Understand what’s being said to them in their native language
- Grammatical markers begin to come in (e.g., -ing, plurals, articles like “the,” etc.)
- Begin to use prepositions such as “in” or “under,” and they use pronouns like I or you. 
- Identify names of everyday objects, relatives, or body parts in both languages
- Produce more and more short sentences, reaching an average of 3 words per
utterance and by the time they turn three, they should speak using sentences in English
of five to six words
- Have a vocabulary of approximately 150-300 words when they are 2, and between 900-
1000 words on average when they reach 3.
- Organize toys by size, color or type
- Sing songs for children in English and repeat some words
- Start to remember their favorite books in English
- Solve easy puzzles
- Use basic pronouns and plurals in English
- Name familiar colors in English
- Answer simple questions
- Compare sizes and understand the idea of two objects being different or the same
- Understand counting and count the numbers in English and their native language as
well
- Have a clearer speech.
